Welcome on board the sport of powerboating. The centre runs the National Powerboat Scheme to meet the needs of those who use small to medium sized powerboats, for pleasure and in connection with other watersports eg sailing, diving etc. The centre recommends that people taking part in courses are 16 years of age and above. The scheme is applicable to sportsboats, RIBs and launches. If you have recently purchased a boat and would like to use it on a course, contact the Senior Powerboat Instructor for details.

The following are the schemes available :

Introduction to Powerboating (Level 1):
Provides a practical introduction to powerboating, covering topics such as:
  • Launching and recovery
  • Safety Equipment
  • Personal Equipment
  • Starting and stopping, steering controls and basic maneuvers
  • Anchoring and securing to a buoy
  • Towing

Course Duration - 1 day

National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2):
Taking what was learnt on the level 1 course, participants move on to more advanced skills which will enable them to confidently take control of a powerboat in reasonable conditions. This certificate is the minimum level for those hoping to become either sailing or windsurfing instructors. The topics

covered on this course include:

  • High and low speed maneuvers
  • Effects of tide and currents
  • Leaving and coming alongside
  • Man overboard!!
  • IRPCS and weather forecasting
  • Emergency procedures

The assessment for this level takes the format of each trainee being assessed individually with the supervising instructor in the boat with you.

Safety Boat Certificate (Level 3):
This course introduces the techniques required to escort racing fleets of dinghies, canoes and windsurfers; provide rescue cover for training fleets and assist in race management. Some First Aid experience is an advantage but not compulsory. Topics covered include:

  • Crew communication (VHF)
  • Race management
  • Positioning in respect of fleet and standing off another craft
  • Coming alongside under way
  • Towing and laying marks
  • Rescue of other water users
  • First Aid
